He tied a rope onto a rooftop airconditioning unit, intending to scale down into Bojangles Restaurant on Liebig Street early on Sunday morning.
However, his plans turned to disaster when he fell through a skylight and crashed to the floor.
Police had been alerted by an alarm system and arrived to find the offender had escaped through a rear window.
He was apprehended hiding in an old shed at the rear.
“We found him with extensive cuts to his hands and head,” Constable Nick Roberts told The Standard. “An ambulance crew attended and he was taken to the base hospital for treatment.
“The bill for damage to the skylight and rear window, plus loss of trade, was estimated at $2500.
“The rope had knots tied in it and it appears he intended abseiling down into the restaurant.”
Constable Roberts said a Warrnambool man, formerly of Port Fairy, aged in his early 20s had been bailed on charges of burglary and criminal damage to face Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.
