Two Warrnambool CFA units arrived at the scene on Stanley Street, Warrnambool, just after 3pm to find flames surrounding the ride-on lawnmower.
Crews had the blaze under control within minutes.
The mower operator was uninjured.
CFA senior station officer Owen Maslen said 200 square metres of the block was burnt out by the small blaze, which caused smoke to be seen over Lake Pertobe.
“It appears to be a lawnmower that’s hit some rocks and started a grass fire,” Mr Maslen said. “There’s been no damage to any fences and the mower should be fine.”
