A driver was hit by flying shrapnel in St Kilda East this afternoon when a power transformer exploded.

Firefighters were called to the corner of Hotham Street and Alma Road just after 2pm.
A power transformer at the top of one of the power poles exploded and caught fire, and caused power outages in the area.
Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board spokeswoman Meg Rayner said there were reports that nearby houses shook from the force of the explosion.
Part of the box at the top of the pole hit a truck travelling south on Hotham Street. The 39-year-old truck driver sustained minor injuries.
"It smashed straight through the middle of the windscreen," Constable Daniel Deason said.
"It's a five or six kilogram piece of plastic.”
The driver was treated by paramedics for minor cuts to his arm but was not taken to hospital.
"The driver thought someone had thrown a rock at the truck as he was taking off from the lights," Ms Rayner said. "He said he was pretty shaken."
An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a driver had been injured but could not provide further details.
The power pole is still standing but power outages have been reported in the area.
Police were on scene directing traffic for about 30 minutes.
