The seaside town is celebrating today after learning it won the title for a community with a population under 10,000 at a gala awards ceremony held overnight at Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.
Port Fairy won the award from second-placed Abbeyleix and third-placed Moynalty Village, both located in Ireland.
The town was the sole Australian winner in the competition which is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program and aims to develop and share international best practice and improve the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of ‘liveable communities’.
Port Fairy's award was accepted by Moyne mayor Jim Doukas, chief executive officer David Madden and community representative Margaret Watt.
