Driver caught in Koroit may be deported

AN Indian national caught travelling at 91km/h in a 50km/h zone down Koroit’s main street could be deported.

The 22-year-old man was intercepted by police in Commercial Road at 1.25am Sunday morning and a driver’s licence and name check revealed there was a warrant out for his arrest.

His student visa had previously been cancelled.

Koroit police arrested the man on the outstanding warrant, bailed him to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court tomorrow and he was immediately detained under the Migration Act. The Indian man then had an interview with a Department of Immigration and Citizenship officer at 4.15am, who decided not to grant a temporary visa.

An officer from the Melbourne office of the department then travelled to Koroit and picked up the man, who has been taken to the immigration detention centre at Maribyrnong.

It is understood the man served a year in Port Phillip prison for robbery and indecent assault offences.

He failed to comply with the conditions of being on the sex offenders’ register which led to the warrant being issued.

It is expected that department officials will decide the man’s fate in coming days and he could be deported back to India.
