Representatives from Moyne, Warrnambool City and Corangamite shire councils, Shipwreck Coast Marketing, Vic Parks, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Victoria Police and concerned residents will come together for the forum which will be staged in Warrnambool on April 19.
The Standard reported yesterday that dozens of so-called "vanpackers" - backpackers in budget-priced vans - stopped in south-west seaside towns every night during the summer period, parking in residential streets to avoid accommodation costs.
Associated problems with impromptu camping have included defecation in front gardens, tent peg holes in nature strips and blocking driveways and footpaths, according to a group of concerned residents who gave a presentation to Corangamite Shire councillors last month.
Shipwreck Coast Marketing (SCM) chief executive Carole Reid said she was aware of the problems associated with vanpackers.
She said the forum would be the first event where solutions could be devised to keep budget tourists in the region without them parking in the main streets of seaside towns.
"It's been a growing issue for some time and there's more discussion about (vanpackers) each summer," Mrs Reid said.
"(Illegal camping) is not peculiar to this area and it will be helpful to have representatives from Vic Parks and the police explain how other communities have dealt with these issues and what measures can be taken.
"I believe the forum is the first of its kind where we've been able to gather all the relevant people together to work out ways to deal with recreational and touring van camping in built-up areas."
Vic Parks executive officer Elizabeth White will address the forum and discuss how other communities across the state have directed camping problems away from residential areas.
Corangamite mayor Matt Makin indicated earlier this week that a forum would be convened to deal with vanpacker problems experienced in Port Campbell and other south-west towns.
