WARRNAMBOOL'S junior basketball squads have kicked off the summer competition in style with a winning effort at their first tournament of the season in Millicent. All but three of the nine Warrnambool teams made it through to the grand finals, with the boys' under 12 division one team and under 14 division two team both finishing the weekend competition undefeated.Warrnambool squad coaching co-ordinator Barry Brooks said all the teams played well."That's probably our best overall result," he said. "We always take a reasonably big contingent and it's a great start to the season."Led by coach Wally Steere, the division one under 12 boys defeated Millicent by 18 points in the grand final (36 to 18) capping off a winning competition."They were ecstatic about it all," Brooks said of the youngsters' win."They're just looking forward to the next tournament with confidence."Brooks said the tournament was also a good chance for new coaches to get a taste for competition.Among the new faces around the court was Seahawks' forward Dion Smith who coached the division two under 12 team to third place overall."It was a good introduction of new coaches," he said."Some of us have been doing it for years, but for the new ones it was great for them to get experience as well." Though their competition started with a loss in the first game, Brooks said Smith and his team came back strong with wins in their other match-ups. About 60 teams from Adelaide, Bordertown, Hamilton, Portland, Mt Gambier, Warrnambool and Millicent competed in the two-day competition. "It was exciting for him and the kids to be competing," he said.
