GARDEN lovers will have a rare opportunity to step inside the wall of Maria and Allan Myers' extraordinary garden at Dunkeld this Saturday.Allan Myers grew up in Dunkeld before embarking on a successful career in law. He returned with his wife Maria in the late 1970s and established a home amid a 9.7-hectare (24-acre) garden, set behind an imposing sandstone wall. The Myers will open the garden in Macarthur Street to the public to help raise funds for a Dunkeld community centre. The open garden will coincide with the Dunkeld Mosaic of Arts Festival. The Myers' garden has been redeveloped to meet the drier conditions of recent years and has beds that have been dedicated to particular genERA of Australian plants, including a rainforest garden that requires very little water. Many of the plants are rare and endangered and some are propagated in the garden's nursery. In other areas there are magnificent sweeping lawns and extensive pathways, two lakes, a conservatory, summer house and stables. The organic vegetable garden has always played an important role, supplying the Myers' home and their well-renowned Royal Mail Hotel with fruit and vegetables. There will be talks on the garden and propagation demonstrations conducted by Neil and Wendy Marriott.Visitors are invited to bring a picnic and spread a rug on the lawn. The garden will be open from 9am-5pm and entry will be $15 for visitors over 15 years old.
