WILD winds fanned a blaze that burnt through 1350 hectares of land at Weerite and Pormborneit, east of Camperdown yesterday afternoon.Volunteers from 45 Country Fire Authority brigades tackled the fire, managing to save all homes that came within its path. Two hay sheds and several derelict outbuildings were destroyed, while there were some confirmed reports of stock losses. Most of the damage centred on properties along both sides of the Princes Highway where sparking powerlines were believed to have caused the blaze. The highway is still closed as Powercor crews work to replace burnt power poles while the rail service between Geelong and Warrnambool has been suspended with hundreds of sleepers along a section of the line damaged in the blaze.Crews are monitoring the fire which is still burning in rugged bush south of Carters Road.
