$660,000 works ease cargo haulage at Warrnambool breakwater

GONE are the days when commercial boat operators had to risk injury by hauling heavy cargo up the sides of the Warrnambool breakwater.

Now thanks to a $660,000 upgrade of the lower landing section, vehicles can be driven closer to the boats through restricted gate access, which means operators don’t have to step around curious onlookers.

The upgraded section of the historic breakwater was officially opened yesterday by Ports Minister and local MP Denis Napthine.

“This will provide a modernised berth for professional fishing boat owners, commercial operators, the Coast Guard and recreational users,” he said.

“It will provide easier and safer access to the water. The upgrade eliminates the need for double handling.”

Work involved widening the landing, installing better lighting and security.

The state government put $585,000 into the project.
