Man charged after overnight Warrnambool scuffle

AN Inverleigh man, 46, has been charged with assault after a 48-year-old man suffered a fractured ankle in a scuffle at Warrnambool's Cally Hotel early this morning.

Warrnambool police Sergeant Rex Habel said the incident happened about 1am and the alleged victim had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The accused man was arrested, interviewed, charged and bailed to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on a date to be fixed.

It is understood the alleged victim from Craigieburn was injured in a wrestle.

The man involved in the assault at the Cally Hotel and one racegoer were arrested and lodged in the Warrnambool police station cells for being drunk in what police described as a fairly quiet opening night for the May Racing Carnival.

In other police news, three Warrnambool men will also be charged with burglary and theft after being caught out the front of an unoccupied building in Warrnambool's Wentworth Street just before midnight.

Gym equipment from the building was recovered.

The men aged 37, 49 and 57 are expected to be charged with burglary and theft-related offences and appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on a date to be fixed.
