Six jobs go as Metaland closes Warrnambool business

SIX jobs are set to go from Warrnambool’s industrial estate with the closure of Metaland’s Warrnambool branch.

Also known as One Steel, Metaland workers were notified this week with the store coming under increased pressure from other competitors in the region.

Metaland regional manager Wayne Lee said in a statement that the closure was a difficult decision which had been made due to “challenging economic conditions”.

“We are committed to continue servicing our customers in the Warrnambool market through our Geelong branch,” Mr Lee wrote to customers.

“Please be assured we well endeavour to make this transition as seamless as possible so as to have minimal impact upon your business.”

The Strong Street business has supplied steel, metal and aluminium products to local operators for more than a decade.

A Metaland spokeswoman said she was not aware of local factors influencing the closure of the outlet, citing nationwide retail trends as the main cause.

She said Warrnambool branch employees would not have their positions relocated to other Metaland sites.

Metaland branches in Queensland and the United States will also be closed.
