Copper thieves return to Powercor depot in Warrnambool

WARRNAMBOOL’S Powercor depot in Strong Street has again been the target of thieves, who were disturbed while trying to steal more copper wire late Tuesday night.

Offenders broke into the depot on Sunday night and stole copper wire and tools valued about $25,000.

Detective Senior Constable Wayne Ryan, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said thieves again broke into the depot and were disturbed by an on-foot security guard about 11.15pm Tuesday.

He said the security guard was near the north-east corner of the depot when he heard running footsteps and observed a small hole cut in the depot fence.

A vehicle was also seen leaving the area. A description was given to police.

“The offender or offenders have attempted to secrete and were in the process of stealing copper wire which was found hidden in bushes,” Detective Senior Constable Ryan said.
