THE Koroit firebug, who is believed to have lit nine fires in the past month, has received nationwide media coverage in the past couple of days.
The firebug story headed the Victorian ABC Television news on Monday night after featuring on statewide ABC Radio during the day.
The story has also received nationwide television, radio and newspaper coverage.
Detective Senior Constable Colin Ryan, of the Warrnambool police criminal investigation unit, yesterday thanked members of the public who have provided information to the police.
“I would like to thank everyone who contacted police and provided assistance. We would ask that people remain vigilant and provide any information to the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” he said.
The firebug started lighting fires on January 2 when he ignited two blazes.
The series was re-ignited on January 22 and then fires were lit on four consecutive days starting last Thursday.
While police continue their investigations, nervous residents in the Koroit area have started a Facebook group called “Help us catch the local FIREBUG!”, which has been set-up “to help inform and keep you up to date, gather information, express opinions and educate you about fire safety”, according to the group’s page.
