Giftware business Nanna’s Drawers is opening a new pop-up book store as part of its first Boxing Day sale.

The retailer in the Glasshouse Plaza off Koroit Street now occupies three shop spaces along the arcade.

Owner Maureen Brunt is delighted to be opening the new space and hopes it will become a permanent addition to her shop.

“We expect that it will continue, we have already had people coming in to buy books from the new store before it is even open,” she said.

“We just expanded into shop seven about eight weeks ago and now we are opening a pop-up book store in shop 10. I was hoping to open the bookshop before Christmas but now it’s opening on Boxing Day.” She is also running a storewide sale for the first time. 

“I don’t like sales, I try to keep things affordable for families all year,” Mrs Brunt said.

“I have been helping out people with Christmas presents over the last week. I keep walking around the shop giving people discounts.”

After three years in business, Mrs Brunt said Christmas had been her most successful so far.

“It is a little niche in town to help out families,” she said.

In Liebig Street, the Uniting Church op shop is also open for people to shop on Boxing Day.

Manager Wendy Crofts said that while the shop didn’t do sales, the prices were reasonable all year around.

“Our goods are all reasonably priced so that things move through the shop,” she said. “I want to value the donations that people make to the shop.

“It’s a good happy feeling, and the volunteers are happy to work on Boxing Day.

“We love to see the tourists come into town especially with Liebig Street finished.”

The traditional Boxing Day sales are still tipped to be busy despite major retailers cutting prices early.
