The 21-year-old claimed a Victorian light heavyweight title on the weekend with a telling victory over Roger Grant.
Coach Ray ‘Mocka’ McIntosh said Jones was ‘fresh, fit and motivated’ heading into his first bout of the year after an extended break from competition.
"He performed and boxed brilliantly, he outclassed Roger Grant and won every round. It was very convincing, it was unanimous,” he said.
"Grant just couldn't match it with Donald's fitness and skills."
Jones, who claimed the title in the 81 kilogram men’s elite open division, said he was glad to be in the ring.
"You can't compare the (winning) feeling with anything else. It makes all the time and effort and sacrifice worth it," he said.
"Now I go into nationals and go as hard as I can and see what I can do. There are a lot of other great boxers that will be there.
"I just have to train as hard as I can, listen to Mocka and I have to travel to get good sparing in."
Jones will fight for the national title in December.
