YMCA’S indoor stadium in Warrnambool reported a loss of $20,000. The loss came through insufficient use of the stadium with trades shows, car shows and live music concerts suggested events that could be brought to the stadium.

GARY Dowie was appointed recreation officer for Port Fairy. Mr Dowie’s role covered the Port Fairy and Belfast Shire councils. Mr Dowie’s qualifications included a diploma of education at Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education.
A PHOTO of the Allansford bridge proved to be an award-winning one for nine-year-old Amy Bantow. Amy won a merit award for the photo in Kodak’s Heritage Week photographic project.
ENTERTAINMENT
DRUMMER Peter O’Keefe became the sixth life member of the Warrnambool City Band. Mr O’Keefe was the band’s drummer for two decades and was given the life membership ahead of his move to live in Perth.
WARRNAMBOOL Holiday Actors presented a stage show of The Pirates of Penzance. The popularity of the production meant shows were held over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
DIANA Ross was number one on the local singles chart with her tune Chain Reaction. Coming in at number two was Cliff Richard was Living Doll and The Bangles rounded out the top three with Manic Monday, which was written by Prince.
The number one album was Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits with Sting’s Dream of the Blue Turtle at number two.
In the US, the number one single was Why Can’t This Be Love by Van Halen. Number two was West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys.
SPORT
HAMPDEN league powerhouse Warrnambool remained unbeaten after defeating arch rival South Warrnambool in round five action. The Blues 45-point victory was set up thanks to outstanding performances from rovers Gary Delaney and Wayne Billings and seven goals from coach Grant Thomas. Darren Bolden kicked six goals for the Roosters and Stephen Anderson four.
THE Terang Thumpers won the A grade Warrnambool and District Volleyball grand final. The Thumpers three sets to one victory came over Hi Fis.
PETER Auchettl coached the Warrnambool High School team to a semi-final appearance in the statewide Country Cup football competition at VFL Park. The Warrnambool team was defeated by Wodonga High School by 21 points. Auchettl praised his team for a brave showing with Ian Johnson, Greg Tory and David Wallace among the best players.
