The May Racing Carnival was huge, the local football was in full swing and hotels and other entertainment venues in the city were attracting a high calibre of performer.
One of the biggest stories of the month of May was Warrnambool City Council’s approval for a new parking scheme. The mayor of the day, Ron Anderson, used his casting vote to ensure the motion was passed. The scheme aimed to provide 163 off-street car parking spaces on the eastern side of Liebig Street between Lava and Koroit streets.
Liebig Street traders called for a special levy to be created to pay for the extra parking spaces. The cost of the new parking project was set at $613,000.
