Geelong-based St Albans has declared its practice match against Cobden this Saturday a fundraiser for the south-west club’s bushfire-affected community.
Cobden president Chris Walsh said a number of members were affected the fires, which ravaged the south-west on St Patrick’s Day.
He sounded appreciation for St Albans’ gesture.
“I think (the fires) have touched a lot of people,” Walsh said.
“We’ve had a young family at Camperdown who have had kids play junior football with our club lose their house, and there are a lot of farmers involved with the club who have had their paddocks scorched and property damaged.
“The support has been terrific from everywhere. The other Hampden league clubs offering support have been massively helpful.”
While the fire destroyed homes and property around the Cobden township, the Bombers were determined to play the fixture as planned.
“It’s a fantastic show of support from St Albans and I think one of the great things about football is that it can bring people together,” Walsh said.
“We’re looking forward to a good hit out against quality opposition, and really in showing our appreciation to St Albans.”
The Supersaints, based in south-east Geelong, are set to hold several raffles and will pass on the entire proceeds to Cobden.
“We know that houses and properties have been lost ... it’s about the Geelong football community at the grassroots level giving back to those who give so much,” St Albans committee member Mark Sinkinson said.
Entry to the match is free, with spectators urged to donate or to purchase a raffle ticket to support the cause.
Matches start at 8.15am, while seniors and reserves will take place from 12pm onwards.
Walsh said Cobden’s netballers would battle Geelong Football League powerhouse South Barwon, with more funds set to be raised through a morning tea and other events.
