Warrnambool Incident Control Centre public information officer Ben Hammond said the fire situation had not changed in the past 24 hours.

“The Gazette and Garvoc fires are considered to be contained – but are not considered safe just yet,” Mr Hammond said.

“The fires are still burning – but only within the containment area.”

A Colac Incident Control spokeswoman said fires in the district had been contained.

“Overnight we’ve had 70 firefighters who have worked to continue to strengthen containment lines,” she said.

“Today we’ll have around 120 firefighters on the fire ground.”

The spokeswoman encouraged residents to ensure they remained up to date with advice messages.

She said there were a number of peat fires in four lake beds which were producing a lot of smoke.

She said the Environment Protection Authority was monitoring air quality in Camperdown, Terang and Cobden.

“The air quality has shown as very good,” she said.

Public information sessions will be held across the district today at:

Garvoc Community Hall at 11am

Cobden Civic Hall at 1pm

Penshurst Memorial Hall at 4pm
