A spokesperson for V/Line said a full inspection of the line has revealed three kilometres of the track is unusable due to sleepers being burnt out.
It is uncertain how long it will take to repair this section. The damaged track is between Warrnambool and Camperdown.
The track between Campedown and Melbourne has been given the all clear with regular train services to return to this section on Tuesday.
Those travelling from Warrnambool to Camperdown will continue do so by coaches.
The V/Line spokesperson said while the normal timetable will apply, those using the service are being urged to take into consideration increased travel times when using the coaches. V/Line is recommending people call its information line, 1800 800 007, or go to its website to check the status of the service before they travel.
