Noah Best put any nerves aside to sink the winning putt and claim his first Port Fairy Golf Club matchplay championship on Sunday.
The Warrnambool teenager rallied from two down with two holes to play against experienced opponent Shane Gurnett, winning the battle between master and apprentice on the sudden-death 19th hole.
Best, 15, said his form fluctuated throughout the tournament and during the windswept final which was delayed at one point due to lightning.
“I got a bit lucky I guess,” he said.
“If he was going to win, he was going to make birdie, so I had to make birdie as well.
“I thought ‘that’s what I have to do’ so I did it.
“It is a big confidence-booster – if I can beat Shane, who is a two-time club champion at Port Fairy and is the pennant captain I can beat anyone I guess.”
Best, who sits equal third in the Warrnambool Golf Club championships, said techniques he’d been finetuning during coaching sessions were coming through in high-stakes match conditions.
“I’ve just been working on my swing. I’ve got to get the ball a bit lower to get it under the wind a bit more, more control as well,” he said.
