The Warrnambool export rocketed up the leaderboard, rising 28 places to finish tied for seventh after firing a five-under par 67 at the Bay Hill course in Orlando.
He was 10 shots shy of champion, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy, who finished 18-under par, scored a three-shot win over American Bryson DeChambeau with Englishman Justin Rose third a further shot back.
Leishman was the best-performed Australian, with Jason Day tied for 22nd.
The world number 16, who has been as high as 12 in the official standings, drained seven birdies in the fourth round with two bogeys his only blemishes in an otherwise strong finish.
Three of his birdies came in a four-hole burst but were punctuated by a bogey in the middle.
