That one shed is about the only worldly possession the Beasleys have left, other than their cattle, most of which have been accounted for after being rescued by a neighbour.

The family was having tea at a friend's place on Saturday night when the blaze ripped through their home and so they had no chance to salvage valuables.

Wedding and engagement rings and family photos went up in smoke.

Mr Beasley said the family was fortunate to have been visiting friends on that fateful Saturday night.

"We would have been inside probably, if we were home, with the blinds down and the kids would have been in bed," he said.

"We wouldn't have been quite as aware ... it probably would have been a lot more scary."

As it turned out the Beasleys arrived at their home around 11pm.

"We got within 500 metres of home and saw pretty much everything there burning, all the trees around burning," he said.

Mr Beasley knew it was too late for his home, the situation too perilous for his family.

So they rushed to his parents' farm on the other side of town to try and help prevent the same thing happening to them. They worked through the early hours of the morning and were back at their own property at 5.30am trying to put out spot fires.

"It wasn't the greatest feeling once I seen it in daylight, the damage done to the fences and to the neighbours and everything around," he said. "It wasn't much of a feeling at all. I was gutted."

But Mr Beasley says his family was lucky. They don’t rely on their farm for a livelihood, as many of their neighbours do: "We run 45 head of stock on the property, it's a bit of a hobby farm, and essentially there's no grass left to feed the animals," he said.

"But our situation is probably not as bad as our neighbour's, who have lost quite a few dairy cattle and most of the grass on their property which is their absolute livelihood, milking cows, so it's going to make it very difficult for everyone ... before we get some rain."

The community, too, has rallied behind the family, donating clothes and putting them up in a vacant house in town while they try to piece their lives back together.

For Maree Beasley, it won’t be the first time. She was five when her family lost their house and farm in the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983.

Mr Beasley said that once his family had gotten back on their feet they planned to rebuild their home on the same grounds.

“We’ll wake up tomorrow, come up with some sort of plan going forward and then move forward as fast as we can,” he said.
