The 73-strong squad competed across multiple events including, beach sprints and flags on the sand, as well as board and iron events in the water.

WSLSC’s director of junior activities John Cook said he was pleased with the whole squad.

“We had some really good results in and out of the water,” he told The Standard. 

“We had some medals and also some placings and we also had a lot of our athletes making finals, which is something these kids have learnt is a great achievement.”

The WSLSC collected 14 medals from the 44 top-six placings. The most successful age group for the club was the under 11 boys, who collected five medals, including a clean sweep of the 500-metre beach sprint.

Will Main, 10, collected the gold in that event with teammates Henry Hoffman,10, and Jack McNeil, 10, collecting the silver and bronze, completing a clean sweep of the sprint for the second year in a row.

“It was my first time getting a gold in the event after I finished second last year,” Main said.

The three boys also collected gold with Will Callaghan in the beach relay and Main also securing a silver in the beach sprint to complete a successful time at the state titles.

In the water Darcy Bridgewater (under 13) and Mia Cook (under 12) both collected silver in the individual board race, while the under nine board relay team of Sam Joseph, Paddy Ragg and Will Ralston won a bronze.

Warrnambool’s Lady Bay was a sea of fluorescent colours on the weekend, as the sports state titles descended on the region for a fifth year in a row, with the two-day event attracting 34 surf lifesaving clubs and over 1400 junior lifesavers.
