Port Campbell police Senior Constable Scott Thompson said that about 4.30pm on Sunday a 55-year-old rider from South Australia was travelling west on the Great Ocean Road when he hit an uneven section of the road.
The condition of the road led to the rider losing control and he headed towards the centre of the carriageway.
“A campervan, which was travelling east, rounded the bend and was travelling over the centre double lines, forcing the rider to drop his bike to avoid being struck by the van,” he said.
“The motorbike was towing a small trailer which came off. The mortorbike suffered minor damage but was towed from the scene.”
Senior Constable Thomson said ambulance officers from Lavers Hill and Apollo Bay attended and treated the rider at the scene for bruising and soreness, but he was not conveyed to hospital.
“The rider was travellingat a low speed at the time of the accident,” he said.
“He was very lucky not to have been more seriously injured or killed. The driver of campervan did not stop, but other motorists assisted the rider and remove his bike and trailer from the road.
“One of those people was fortunately a nurse and they applied first aid and a sling to rider’s shoulder.”
Senior Constable Thompson said the accident happened about 100 meters east of last Thursday’s fatal motor bike accident site on the same section of the Great Ocean Road.
He said VicRoads was notified about the uneven surface on Sunday night.
It is understood that Colac Highway Patrol Unit police officers are investigating the cause of last Thursday’s accident and the state of the road is expected to come under intense scrutiny.
