Readers of The Standard have a range of suggestions for new city council festivities throughout the year, after the announcement that the annual Fun4Kids Festival would no longer run last week.
Overall 508 people voted in our online poll, with many others adding their suggestions on The Standard’s Facebook page.
Residents say they still want a family-oriented festival which is suitable for children.
That suggestion garnered 173 votes.
The second-most wanted event was a food and wine festival, with 100 votes.
A music festival gathered 94 votes, while 50 voters would like to see a motorsport event in the city.
Readers were also able to make their own suggestions in the poll, which was open for voting over the weekend.
Some of those included keeping Fun4Kids, arts and culture events, a writer’s festival and a Red Hot Summer Tour.
People also pitched for a multicultural festival, a garden expo and a Fun4Dogs festival.
Some interesting suggestions for new local events included a potato festival, a rural sexpo, a jelly wrestling event, a punk rock music festival and a comic/pop culture convention.
Readers also put forward a range of business proposals or infrastructure suggestions.
A permanent ice rink was popular, as was an indoor playground.
An indoor water park/splashzone also garnered support.
One person said “invest more money into Lake Pertobe”. “We have enough events in Warrnambool”.
Another suggested “community-led projects and hubs, not booze fests”.
While not events or festival ideas, people also took the opportunity to suggest the city council should “fix the pedestrian crossings up the main street” and “fix the boat ramp”.
