Justin Coates’ century put a dampener on an otherwise bright bowling performance from Mailors Flat, with Grassmere posting 229 at stumps.
The Jets lost three early wickets, but with Sri Lankan Shanaka Perumpuli not out on 34, skipper Phil Edwards believes his side is still in the hunt.
“We’re not out of it – Bryce (Conheady) is starting to show a bit of form with the bat and we’ve still got two pretty consistent batsmen to come in after that,” Edwards said. “If we were ever a chance for a win, I sort of earmarked this game. I don’t think they have the strongest of bowling line ups but they’re not going throw the game away.”
Edwards said it was vital for his men to see out the remaining 70 overs. “We’ll just aim to see out the game. Hopefully that will get the lads to bat well.”
Mailors Flat is last and is yet to record a victory, with two losses and five outright defeats.
