Warrnambool’s Civic Green is the first stop on the CPR Lab rural roadshow tour where free CPR lessons and first aid kits will be offered to participants between 11am and 2.30pm.
The lab comes equipped with computer-connected manikins which provide immediate feedback on CPR technique, including depth and rate of compressions.
Compressions are timed with a playlist of appropriate, in-rhythm top hits including the Bee Gee’s Staying Alive and Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive. The visit aims to give people the confidence and skills to save a life in an emergency.
A 2016, a Victorian State Government report revealed that 8.3 per cent in Warrnambool suffered from heart disease and 20.2 per cent reported high blood pressure, both known risk factors of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
St John Ambulance Victoria CEO Gordon Botwright said it was important the public was ready to provide first aid when a sudden cardiac arrest strikes.
“Every minute that passes is critical,” he said.
“Without CPR, the person’s survival rate declines at 10 per cent per minute.
“In these instances it’s the bystanders that have the power to save a life.”
