Grace Howard was 13 when she lost her battle with cancer in 2014. This year she should have been among the graduating class.
Her memory has been honoured annually with the Gracie’s Flutterbys team in the Corangamite Relay For Life, and her classmates and friends have always been big supporters.
This year was a little different, though, with Grace’s close friends and Mercy Regional College year 12s Brooke Hallyburton and Sarae Hickey also organising a school fund-raiser to help boos the amount raised.
Mercy’s well-being co-ordinator Emily Stephens said the pair helped co-ordinate the bake-off fund-raiser ahead of this weekend’s 2018 Relay For Life at Terang.
“It was really important to the girls to continue Gracie’s memory, she holds a special spot in everyone’s hearts at Mercy,” she said.
The fund-raiser took on a bake-off-style format with staff encouraged to make their signature slice. It was then up to them to spruik their creations to students and sell as many as they could.
“It was really fun,” Ms Stephens said.
“It was a lovely way to keep Gracie’s memory alive at Mercy and it raised about $650.”
Gracie’s Flutterbys will be among the teams taking to the Terang Recreation Reserve for the 2018 Relay For Life this weekend.
The event begins on Saturday at the Strong Street venue from 5pm and the candlelight ceremony will be held at 8pm.
Participants will then take part in a continuous relay until 11am on Sunday.
The Terang event will be the 9th Relay For Life event in Corangamite, with the community raising $860,000 so far.
Money raised from the event helps Cancer Council Victoria fund research, undertake prevention programs and provide support services for people with cancer, including the Cancer Council 13 11 20 support line.
