Jason Goodland, 41, did not apply for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody until March 9.
Solicitor Jack Rabl requested an urgent medical assessment as his client suffers bipolar, schizophrenia and is withdrawing from cannabis use.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan ordered Mr Goodland appear in the next hearing via a video link.
Earlier: A HAMILTON man who used a hockey stick to smash up his own home is now in the Warrnambool police station cells on assault-related charges.
He was arrested on Wednesday by Hamilton police, taken to the Hamilton Base Hospital for treatment, remanded in custody by a bail justice and transported to the Warrnambool police station.
The man will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a bail/remand hearing on Thursday.
Five police officers went to the man's home after it was reported by his partner that he was causing damage to their home.
He had used a hockey stick to smash furniture, plaster walls, a wood heater, fridge and a door behind which his partner was taking shelter.
The man was arrested and has been charged with four offences.
