Her three teammates – Marian McKenzie, Di Sullivan and Carmel Hughes – jokingly told her she had to lift her game if they were to go back-to-back in the Marjorie Robinson Bowl.
The demands worked wonders.
The Warrnambool-based quartet defeated teams from across the state to lift the prestigious crown for the second-successive year on Tuesday.
“I played pretty poorly last year, and these girls have been at me all year,” Gilbert laughed.
“The pressure was right on me. But no, we’re very proud to have won the bowl. It’s a very prestigious competition.”
The Marjorie Robinson Bowl is a four ball better ball stableford event, with a history spanning 55 years.
Robinson was a popular player and former lady captain, president, secretary at Warrnambool.
McKenzie reportedly kept her team on the same page with a text message on Tuesday morning.
“It said ‘don’t let your mind get in the way of your body on the golf course’,” Hughes told The Standard.
“We just knew we had to be positive in playing our shots.
“Each time you come out on a golf course things are entirely different. For us to get it all together on the one day, that was fantastic.”
Sullivan said the feat was made special by the strong friendship ties the quartet shared.
She revealed a night of celebrations – with plenty of champagne – were in order.
