Welcome return: The R711 will visit Warrnambool in May, about 16 years after its last visit in 2002 when it was brought to town by West Coast Rail.
It’s been 14 years since a steam engine last traveled the railway tracks to Warrnambool, so train enthusiast Eddie White has made it his mission to bring one to town.

A vintage R711 steam engine will visit on May 12, arriving in Warrnambool about 1.30pm before returning to Melbourne that night. “Warrnambool hasn’t seen a steam train since 2004 and this one hasn’t been here since 2002,” Mr White said.
Bookings for the trip go on sale later this week at www.steamrail.com.au.
