Liz Harris and Dan Imbess were on a motorbike near Port Campbell on February 3 when they were struck by a mini-bus, which witnesses said was on the wrong side of the road.
The couple’s friend Maree Retica Farchione has set up a GoFundMe page to help the couple on their road to recovery.
“As most of you all know on Saturday afternoon our beautiful friend Liz and her boyfriend Daniel were involved in a horrific accident on their motorbike,” Ms Farchione wrote.
She said they both remained in hospital but were now recovering out of intensive care.
“They both suffered terrible injuries,” Ms Farchione said.
“Apart from them both having many broken bones Liz had to have her leg amputated and Daniel had his arm amputated.”
Ms Farchione has asked for people to help the couple financially in this trying time.
She described Ms Harris as “a beautiful person with a big heart”.
“Any kind of donation would be very much appreciated,” she said.
“It will lessen their financial burden and therefore they can fully concentrate on their recovery and rehabilitation.”
Almost $9000 has been raised for the couple on the GoFundMe page.
The accident prompted renewed calls from police and the local community for additional safety measures along the Great Ocean Road.
Sergeant Dean Greenwood, of the Warrnambool Highway Patrol, said he was concerned about the high number of motorists flouting the law on the Great Ocean Road.
“I would ask motorists to take care and be extra vigilant on the Great Ocean Road because we know that area is frequented by not only tourists from interstate but international tourists who perhaps aren’t as familiar with the local road network as other drivers,” Sergeant Greenwood said.
