UPDATE: 6.05pm
Two women are being flown to Melbourne in a critical condition after an accident in Illowa on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened at the intersection of Southern Cross and Tower Hill roads.
Koroit police Sergeant Pat Day said it appeared the female driver of the grey Mazda sedan and her passenger, were travelling east on the Tower Hill Road, towards Warrnambool, and failed to stop at the intersection.
The Mazda collided with a white dual cab Nissan Navara, driven by a female P-plater, heading north on Southern Cross Road about 4.20pm.
“We believe (the driver of the Mazda) has failed to give way for whatever reason and has been struck by the Nissan Navara,” Sergeant Day said.
He said the air ambulance would land at the scene to fly the female driver, 58, to Melbourne, while her passenger, aged in her early 60s, would be transported by road ambulance to the Warrnambool Airport and flown to Melbourne.
He said the female P-plate driver was in shock but not injured in the crash.
“The driver and the passenger from the grey Mazda are being airlifted and they’re both in a critical condition,” he said.
Sergeant Day said emergency services and SES members worked to free the two women from the sedan. “They’ve had to cut the car to get both of them out.”
Sergeant Day said the roads would be closed for some time while police completed their investigations. The Major Collision Unit may also come from Melbourne, he said.
Sergeant Day said factors that contributed to the crash were unknown at this stage. “Early indications are that we’ve got is (the driver) failed to stop at a stop sign but we’re going to have to make some more inquiries.
“The roads are going to be closed for some time.”
He said multiple passers-by stopped to render assistance and Warrnambool SES, two ambulances, a paramedic and CFA units attended.
Five people were injured in a two-car crash at the same site in July last year.
The 2017 incident occurred when a family of six from China were travelling north on Southern Cross Road and collided with a Portland couple travelling south near the intersection of Tower Hill Road.
