On Monday afternoon however, the Timor Street grocery store kick-started a $270,000 community appeal.
In a year-long in-store promotion entitled Community Chest, Warrnambool’s Swintons Supa IGA store collected a percentage of sales that were donated directly to the city’s latest cancer appeal.
Swintons IGA donated $4000 to Warrnambool’s CFA branch and South West Healthcare.
Hospital spokesperson Suzan Morey said the donation of funds was timely.
“It was a fantastic kick-start to our prostate cancer appeal that launched today,” she said. “We’re hoping lots of businesses support the appeal like IGA have.”
Warrnambool CFA also received funds from the promotion which volunteer Carolyn Bishop said would assist in the purchase of much-needed equipment.
“The money will help us purchase branches for hoses,” she said. “These are parts of the hoses that facilitate in extinguishing grass fires.”
IGA store manager Brett Moloney said he hoped the promotion would continue.
“It’s just a small way that we can help out the community,” he said. “But I guess every little bit counts.”
