Picking a Melbourne Country Week squad, to put it lightly, isn’t fun.
But for the most part, Warrnambool selectors have it right this time out.
Some genuine players have missed out.
You can’t go past the likes of Jason Perera, who has been unlucky for the second-successive year, Alastair Templeton and Josh Stapleton who have also been snubbed despite lighting up the association this season.
Jordan Graham is another. Port Fairy is unbelievably unlucky to not have a representative. Selectors have picked a specialist spinner in Ben Evans, and it feels like most of Warrnambool’s cricket fraternity wants the orthodox bowler to get his chance. Commend the selectors for their faith in picking options like West Warrnambool’s import Jack Sunderland, Merrivale’s Jeremy Burgess and Allansford’s Chris Bant.
They’re three in-form players who have earned their chance.
It’s what this initiative needs – bold risk-taking in selection.
