Adrian Mitchell, 33, of Ballarat Road, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court this week.
When magistrate Michael Coghlan offered to jail Mitchell for the three days he had already spent in police cells, Mitchell said: "Done".
Police said that at midnight on Saturday Mitchell and a woman jumped the fence at the Hamilton Salvation Army yard.
He and the woman rummaged through boxes and bags taking clothes valued at $50 which was caught on security camera footage.
When talked to by police Mitchell said he jumped the fence, looked around and left, but initially denied stealing the clothes.
Mitchell is due to appear in court again on February 7 charged with possessing cannabis, medication and a weapon and escaping from custody.
Other charges, including recklessly causing injury and breaching bail, are scheduled to be heard in court on March 21.
