Lawn Tennis Green’s remarkable rise through the Western District Bowls Division Tuesday pennant ranks has the competition’s best sides on notice.
Green, which was promoted from division two at the start of this season, scored its fifth triumph of the campaign and claimed Mortlake Blue’s scalp on Tuesday.
Lawn Tennis skipper Marian Treweek said the triumph had energised the club, with the Pertobe Road-based outfit moving into sixth place.
“I think it's ruined (Mortlake Blue’s) finals chances. Over the past five years or so they’ve sort of been our nemisis – we’ve had lots of tight tussles with them,” she said.
“We certainly always enjoy the games against them and consider them to be very formidable opponents.”
Treweek’s rink held off Dianne Robertson’s to notch a 12-shot victory, while Rosemary Alderman and Doreen Prout also recorded triumphs.
Lawn Tennis Green finished 23 shots up.
Treweek, a former schoolteacher, said he rink managed to create momentum with a strong start.
“We got off to a good start and that was very important for us. We’ve been a bit slow out of the blocks for the last few weeks,” she revealed.
“We’re definitely happy with how we’re travelling as a whole. To come up from division two, we were just hoping to stay off the bottom of the ladder really.”
She said the club was preparing for a tough run home, with division giants City Memorial and Warrnambool looming as hard opposition.
“We’ve got one of the City teams and they’re always hard to face, and Warrnambool are just always in the top five,” Treweek said.
“It’s going to be tough, but as long as we do our best against them, there’s not much else we can do.
“It’s all been very good this season. I think we realise we aren’t going to get into finals but that doesn’t stop us having a really good go.”
Elsewhere, City Gold comfortably accounted for cross-town rival Warrnambool Gold at home.
Kaye Maddern’s rink was the most dominant, defeating Brenda Hawker by 16 shots.
Collen Haberfield and Paul Symmons’ rinks, meanwhile, played out a thrilling draw, while Val Hasell defeated Helen Lock by six shots.
Second-placed Koroit Orange held off City Green to notch a 16-shot victory.
Martin Brown’s rink was the biggest victor, lowering the colours of Murray Smith.
Port Fairy Gold rounded out the round with a thumping triumph, defeating Dennington Red by 38 shots.
Graeme Jessen’s rink had the largest triumph.
