January 23: A WARRNAMBOOL youth walking home a female friend was the victim of a vicious gang bashing on Saturday night.
Patrick “Paddy” Bubb, 17, was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with a fractured skull, cheekbone, suspected fractured eyesocket and bleeding on the brain.
His uncle Wayne Bubb is shocked an unprovoked attack like this could happen in Warrnambool and he is keen to help police track down the offenders.
“I guess I’m shocked something like this happened in Warrnambool – you don’t expect this type of thing to happen in a country town,” Mr Bubb said.
“My understanding is he was at a party during the evening and a young girl needed to go home,” Mr Bubb said. “Paddy and a friend decided to walk her home.”
The trio was stunned when a gang of six men, believed to be in their early 20s, approached them at the corner of Banyan and Cramer streets. The group of guys just came out of the bushes,” Mr Bubb said. “The biggest guy walked up and punched Paddy in the back of the head. He started to get up and he was punched again.
“He got back up on his feet after being hit three times and was able to run off.”
Mr Bubb said Paddy’s friend was also punched and the girl was grabbed around the neck. “One of the them grabbed the girl but apparently one of the guys grew a bit of a conscience and said ‘we don’t bash up girls’.”
Mr Bubb said his nephew was taken to hospital and flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
“They flew him down to Melbourne mainly as a precaution in case they needed to relieve any pressure (on the brain),” he said.
Mr Bubb said his nephew was in good spirits, responding to Facebook messages to let friends know he is OK.
He has asked friends on Facebook to share a post about the incident, urging any witnesses to contact police.
The post has been shared more than 1000 times, with people expressing disbelief at the incident.
“The kids were trying to walk a girl home, for god’s sake,” Mr Bubb said.
Warrnambool police Acting Sergeant Lachlan Barr said there was an incident about 11.30pm Saturday night at the intersection of Cramer and Banyan street, near the top of the Banyan Street hill.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
