Sergeant Mick Wolfe, of Port Fairy police, said the man was driving his Mercedes sedan north on Sackville Street at 7.55pm on Thursday night when he veered to the left and hit two parked vehicles.
He said the 55-year-old St Leonards man continued driving and did a u-turn at Bank Street. The man was then waved down by witnesses.
Sergeant Wolfe said police attended and the man was taken to Port Fairy police station where he recorded a blood alcohol reading of .209. He said the man had his licence immediately suspended and his car impounded for one month.
Sergeant Wolfe said it was amazing that the man had continued to drive after one of the rims on the Mercedes had been ripped off.
He said the crash caused the parked vehicles to move across the the parking bays and they suffered moderate damage. “It’s ridiculous,” he said. He said it was lucky there hadn’t been any people near the parked cars when the crash happened. “This is exactly what we talk about with alcohol and driving,” he said. Sergeant Wolfe said the man had been charged on summons.
Police have the power to immediately impound a vehicle if an offender is caught for a dangerous drink driving offence, hoon driving or high risk driving.
