Motels as far as Terang and Colac were expected to share in the economic boost from the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic.
The international event is anticipated to inject about $3.5 million directly into the Warrnambool economy.
Premier Speedway general manager David Mills said it had been estimated that speedway events across the year brought in about $7 million each year to the local economy. Mr Mills said accommodation at Warrnambool over the weekend was at a premium.
“The influx doesn’t just start today,” he said.
He said Warrnambool was often used as a base with fans making their way to Avalon and Mount Gambier for more racing.
Warrnambool City Council's visitor economy manager David McMahon echoed Mr Mills and said the annual event was crucial to the city’s tourism calendar.
He said the three day showcase attracted high yield visitation.
“They spend a higher proportion than other visitors,” he said. “It’s something they’re indulging in.
“When they’re here they’re going to restaurants. Accommodation at Warrnambool is almost at capacity.”
Mr McMahon said Warrnambool was very lucky to have the Princes Highway venue which attracted some of the best drivers in the world. “It’s such an important piece of infrastructure,” he said.
“It’s great family entertainment and it’s very different to anything else. I’d like to reinforce the wonderful job that David Mills and the volunteers do out there.”
