Hamilton police say a 17-year-old has been stabbed and taken to hospital.
Detective Sergeant Mark James, from Hamilton police criminal investigation unit, said the male victim was undergoing treatment at the Hamilton hospital and was in a stable condition.
Detective Sergeant James said a 33-year-old man had been arrested and was in police custody.
He said the man was assisting police with their inquiries.
A MAN will undergo surgery after being seriously assaulted in Hamilton overnight.
Hamilton police Sergeant Mark Phillips said an incident happened in a resident Hamilton street last night at about 11.30pm between men who knew each other.
He said one of those men was in the Hamilton Base Hospital seeking medical attention and he would undergo surgery later today.
"We are investigating the cause of this incident. The men were known to each other and one of them has suffered serious injuries," he said.
Sergeant Phillips said a 33-year-old Hamilton man was in custody and helping police.
"He's assisting police with our inquiries, we're still in the process of speaking with him," he said.
Sergeant Phillips said police were yet to talk to a number of potential witnesses.
"Anyone who was a witness or who has information about this incident is requested to contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
