The roof panel is believed to have come loose from the north-east corner of the SCG, while Thunder players were warming up on that side of the ground.
Players were immediately sent off the ground and it does not appear that anyone was injured in the incident.
UPDATE: Gates are now open. A panel on the @SCG roof had to be secured after heavy winds. We apologise for the delay. The @SixersWBBL match will commence at 3.30pm. #BBL07 #SydneySmash??? Sydney Cricket Grnd (@scg) January 13, 2018
The SCG advised on its social media accounts that gates would remain closed and play delayed for the WBBL clash between the Sydney Sixers and Thunder because of a "maintenance issue".
The rogue roof panel caused a delay of an hour, with the WBBL match beginning at 3.30pm rather than at 2.30pm, as expected.
A BBL game between the Sydney Sixers and Thunder is scheduled for 7.20pm.
The SCG wrote there was no change to the BBL "start time at this stage", on its Twitter account on Saturday afternoon.
