Mr Sharp said the 87-year-old rail motor was initially built to service the smaller branch lines around Victoria.
“It ran all over the place until they closed those branch lines,” he said. “In the later years it ran to places like Seymour, Kyneton and Bacchus Marsh until the early 1990s when they retired them from service. They (then) became heritage vehicles and they run tours all over Victoria now.
“It’s a great machine to drive. It’s a lot different to every other train, everything on this train you have to do yourself. It’s a great old train.” The train arrived at Warrnambool train station at 1.40pm and ran four shuttle services.
Train enthusiasts were also treated to a range of exhibits at the annual Warrnambool Model Railway Club exhibition. Club president Lindsay Bamford said numbers had been up on the previous year and he had been delighted with the local support.
