CIARON Maher joined forces with three international buyers to purchase a yearling colt by Snitzel for $1.6 million on the second day of the four-day Magic Millions Yearling Sales on the Gold Coast on Thursday.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds, Yulong Investments, Aquis and Maher are in the ownership of the well-bred colt who will be trained by Maher.

The group one-winning trainer, who can resume training on April 1 after being suspended for six months over an ownership wrangle, spent over $4 million on 14 yearlings at the record-breaking sale.

Maher’s other purchases on Thursday included a Snitzel filly which cost $575,000.

A filly by I Am Invincible for $450,000  and two Dissident fillies – one for $260,000 while the other sold for $200,000. A colt by Written Tycoon which sold for $320,00 was his most expensive purchase on Wednesday while other buys on the opening day were a filly by Fastnet Rock  for $210,000, followed by a Dream Ahead filly for $150,000.

Maher, who arrived back in Australia  only days before Christmas after a working holiday meeting international buyers in England, Ireland and Japan is expected to be an active buyer on the final two days of the sales.
