The fireworks were still exploding in the sky above the Lady Bay when Warrnambool welcomed its first baby for 2018 on Monday morning.

As thousands welcomed the new year at the city’s foreshore, Panmure parents Andrew Thomson and Sally Jane were making the twenty-minute drive to South West Healthcare’s maternity ward to welcome their newest bundle.
“The car ride was interesting,” said dad Mr Thomson. “And when we arrived we could see the fireworks from our room.”
The couple’s second child Josephine (Josie) Jane Thomson was born at 1.15am.
The 3.2 kilogram bundle of joy was greeted by mum, dad and two year-old brother Percy.
“He was far more interested in the tractor his new sister bought him though,” Mr Thomson said.
“But that’s probably a good thing for now.”
Having passed her due date of December 27, mum Sally Jane said she wasn’t expecting such a fast birth.
“I guess she just wanted to be born in 2018,” she said. “But it was quicker than we’d expected.”
Josephine was earlier than last year’s first baby, Harvey Goss, who was born at 10.30am on January 1, 2017.
