Victoria's tennis aces shine in the heat at day one of the Junior and AMT Open at Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club

WARRNAMBOOL’s young tennis aces Elloise Swarbrick, Tom Gedye and Patrick Drake overcame the heat on and off court to win their opening matches of the Junior and AMT Open on Wednesday.

Swarbrick, 15, and Gedye, 13 won their opening round matches in three sets, while Drake,15, progressed through the first and second round of the open.

There were early fears from tournament director Sharyn Warren about the weather forecast of extreme heat.

“We were considering calling it off,” she said.

“But then some cloud cover came over and we were able to continue with the matches uninterrupted.”

Harry Boyd, 15, was successful in the first round, but failed to progress through his match in the second round.

Zach Dyson won his first round, while a Warrnambool playoff between Joseph Mahony and Jeremy Attrill went the way of former in three sets.

The weather will be a lot cooler for the second day of competition on Thursday.
