Warrnambool police Sergeant Callum McKinnon said the accident happened at 11.45am Sunday when the farmer was going between paddocks separated by Callaghans Road.
He said it was suspected there had been a mechanical failure involving the quad bike but the accident was being investigated by both the police and WorkSafe.
"The farmer in his early 70s was flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne after coming off his quad bike and suffering serious injuries," he said.
"He's in a critical but stable condition," he said.
