THE process to elect Mick Wolfe for his first term as Moyne Shire Council mayor was an uncomplicated one. Late last month, Cr Wolfe was elected to the top job unopposed by his fellow councillors.
It was a very different story in the race for Moyne mayor back in 2007.
Back then, councillors Ken Gale and Di Clanchy both put their hand up to wear the mayoral chains. They were the only candidates after the sitting mayor Gerald Madden decided not to put his hand up again. The vote turned out to be a thriller with a 5-5 result. Voting for Cr Gale were Ros Stewart, Geoff Rollinson, Jim Doukas, and Frank Norton. In Cr Clanchy’s corner were Madden, Brenda Hampson, Bruce Couch and Stan Cook.
To break the deadlock, the names of Cr Gale and Cr Clanchy were written on ping pong balls and placed in a box. The new mayor was to be decided by whose name was pulled out first. On this occasion, it was Koroit-based Cr Gale who won the lottery and was cast into the top job.
